The latest addition to the studio is this well-cared for 12×18 C&P Old Series. Production of this model began around 1890 at the Chandler & Price Co. of Cleveland, Ohio. Based on the serial number cast into the bed of the press, this fine machine was built between 1896 and 1897.


The Miehle Vertical

Production of this press began in 1921 at The Miehle Printing Press & Manufacturing Company in Chicago, Illinois. This press is capable of printing at a rate of 3600 impressions per hour (iph) on a sheet of paper as large as 13 1/2″ x 20″.

The Miehle Vertical, so named because the impression cylinder travels vertically, is a whirlwind of motion in perfect harmony; a living testament to the ingenuity of the Industrial Age.


GEM Paper Cutter

This paper cutter dates back to about the 1890’s and is the oldest piece of equipment in the studio. With a 32″ knife, this guillotine will slice through the old phone directory as if it were a pat of warm butter.

The brass plate mounted on the frame states: “New Series, GeoH. Sanborn, New York, Howard Iron Works, Buffalo NY”
